Export Classification Program Streamlines Globalization Process

The Need:

When a major U.S. aerospace company was faced with the need to rapidly globalize its manufacturing processes, Xport Consultants stepped in to facilitate the effort. The export classification of technical information and hardware is an early step in planning any globalization effort. It is best to know which technology and hardware require an export license – and which might be unlicensable – before deciding what technologies to place in a given country. And, of course, time was of the essence.

The Solution:

Given a list of 125,000 items to classify – and access to the appropriate engineering information – Xport Consultants was able to determine the export classifications of more than 59,000 hardware and technical data items within the first year. With this information the customer was able to organize its export licensing program – a requirement for getting the globalization effort underway.

Benefits:

Xport Consultants provided a dedicated, full-time staff that was trained in an export classification process approved by the customer. Because our staff took on the effort, the customer’s staff remained free to concentrate on its primary tasks and the customer could experience a work flow uninterrupted by the classification effort.

Xport Consultants’s customer received its export classifications within schedule and at a significant cost savings when compared with the customer’s projected in-house cost.

In addition, Xport Consultants did more than conduct an export classification analysis of individual items. Xport Consultants worked to better define the customer’s export classification process and to develop new tools to aid in that process. These tools were then integrated back into the customer’s information databases, becoming part of the way that export classification is conducted by the customer’s own employees.
